Reality Check

My dad had a heart attack this morning, or as the doctor put it, he 'tried' to have a heart attack.  He'd apparently woke up with stomach pains that he thought was gas.  He took some gas pills and it subsided.  He had a quick meeting at 10a, where he developed the pain again, and this time they were much more severe.  He actually called 911 as he was driving home, and met the ambulance at the house.  They assessed him, and took him to St. Mary's Hospital (in KW, St. Mary's is known for cardiology, where Grand River is more for cancer treatment), where he was immediately admitted to ICU.

Dad's girlfriend Lana called us after the ambulance left, and I was asked to call my sisters.  Great.  I don't know if it was fate or what, but both were quick to answer the phone - Courtney was supposed to be camping this weekend, but for whatever reason she and Ben ended up staying home, and Toria was done work early, so I caught her as she was heading home.

We met at Emerg, then headed up to ICU to hopefully see Dad.  After about 10 min, they wheeled him out to go for more tests, and possibly surgery.

Gawd, I'll never forget seeing him on that gurney, oxygen mask on, wires and tubes, looking so scared and vulnerable - Daddies are supposed to be strong and indestructible.  We all gave him a quick kiss and watched them roll him down the hall.  Off to the waiting room to await word as to what was wrong.

It turns out that Dad has an extra (minor) artery attached to his heart - rare, but not unheard of - that was completely blocked.  They put a shunt in to open it. Since it was so small and minor, I guess that's why the doctor said he 'tried' to have a heart attack.  However, a major artery at the front is 50 percent blocked - not causing any problems right now, but something to keep an eye on, and obvious lifestyle changes need to be made to prevent any further blockage (stop smoking, diet change, increased exercise).

He'll stay in the hospital until Tuesday at least, then off work for the next couple of weeks.

Fussy + drool x hand gnawing = teething?

That's what it seems like.  Stephen is 15 weeks on Wednesday, and though that's a bit early, everything I've read seems to point towards teefs.

We have a doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks, so I'll confirm with her.  Until then though, my poor little guy is going to be nom nom nomming on cold, wet facecloths and soothers dipped in ice water.

Road trips!

Way back, when my friend Ang still lived in BC, I'd talked about driving out there whenever I was on maternity leave with the baby.  Ang is back in Ontario now, but I'm thinking some road trips with the wee man are in order.  I'll admit, I'm a little nervous at just the two of us heading out, but it will be nice to see...well, everybody :)

Jay and I are already heading to the cottage to see my grandparents for three days in August, but I've had requests by newschick to come to Chatham and my cousin Sarah to go to Trenton.  I should also go see the aformentioned Ang, seeing as she's the one who really inspired all this...
